IITM grad: 1983
Venky Krishnaswamy taught himself to play guitar during his IIT days, parking in the rooms of his more musically accomplished hostel mates for hours at a time! His grades absolutely tanked in his 2nd year as he spent more time staring at the fretboard than he did at the blackboard. Venky considered the trade-off eminently worthwhile as he ended up playing in both the Western and Light music bands at IIT by his 3rd year. After he moved to the US, he taught himself to play keyboards after being gifted a brand new Korg 01/W - the same instrument which A.R. Rahman used in a lot of his early compositions. Venky was a co-founder of 2 light music bands while he was resident in New Jersey – Geethanjali and Jersey Rhythms. He has performed in over a hundred stage and house concerts over the past 25 years. Venky is also a composer and arranger and very interested in the technical aspects of music production such as sound design, mixing and post-production.
