IITM grad: 1999
My introduction to some great music came by means of being recruited to play keyboards while I was a “freshie” at IITM in 1995. I had the great opportunity to play with the post-doc band featuring the amazing vocalist Shalini. I recall fondly the days when we spent late night hours at SAC with the band where we practiced everything from Sting to Steely Dan, with the highlight of course being Shalini’s vocal range in the Pink Floyd song “The great gig in the sky”.
That’s when I was also introduced to Prasanna’s music and his amazing guitar work in Carnatic albums and Tamil film music. Later in 2006, when I moved to Boston I had the unique privilege of living across from Prasanna & Shalini and I had the chance to formalize my raw knowledge of music under Prasanna’s guidance. For the first time, I was forced to better understand maestro Ilaiyaraaja’s music while at the same time being introduced to some great Bebop music (Monk, etc.).
Since moving to San Francisco in 2012, I have focused mostly on expanding my repertoire on the keyboard, primarily focused on Tamil film music while also playing popular Hollywood film themes, TV themes, and popular music. Some of my shorter performances can be found under the instagram moniker @alexpandian, which also has a link to my YouTube page where I play longer duration performances.
